"Simply put, the first face of Clark is its structure. This is the most superficial level that one can move through the school. The structure of Clark University is this:^A

 "This face of Clark is only invoked when absolutely necessary, such as when a student has an idea or some bad shit goes down and everyone closes ranks. Most of the time, things are dealt with on Face #3, and you only have to deal with one section of the school at a time, such as Housing, or Physical Plant.

 "The problem with working within this face of the school is that, while the hierarchy is unambiguous, there isn't any real protocol for moving from segment to segment of it. The Dean of the Students doesn't really have a system for bringing a student proposal to the attention of the Dean of the College, for example.

 "The only thing a student can do is try to work within one of the other faces, while appearing to be in this face. It can be tricky, because people will bust you for 'violating the hierarchy' while knowing full well nobody actually follows it. Sociologists have known about this for years, but seem incapable of doing anything about it.^B

 "And keep in mind, each face of Clark only makes sense in the context of the other ones."
